"It was 20 years ago today..."

We were supposed to open August 19th, but that’s when Hurricane Bob hit Massachusetts in 1991. Oddly, the hurricane came as a relief. We were exhausted having pulled a near all-nighter on the 18th getting our original restaurant in the basement of that old police station in Union Square, Somerville ready for its first customers. We slept through the storm, and opened the next evening, August 20, 1991, rested and ready (sort of!) -  twenty years ago today.

Ribbon Cutting - Somerville - October 1991

October 2, 1991 Ceremonial Robbon Cutting -Founders Bob Perry, Longteine de Monteiro and Kenthao de Monteiro, with then Somerville Mayor, U.S. Congressman Michael Capuano, former Mayor Brennan, and a host of Somerville Chamber of Commerce officials.

The founders were an unlikely team: a former Cambodian ambassador’s wife turned chef, and a much younder American college dropout turned ice cream man. But with healthy doses of duty, hard work, talent, creativity, some incredible good fortune, timely reinforcements in the form of fresh family members, and the support of a committed core of employees, we established, grew, and sustained The Elephant Walk restaurants in Greater Boston through a great many challenges.

Born in a recession and having weathered two others, we survived the losses of one restaurant destroyed by flood (Somerville in June 1998) and another by fire (Boston in January 2003); we came of age during the flowering of Greater Boston’s now vibrant restaurant culture. The Elephant Walk has been tested by time.

The second decade was far more difficult than the first. By 2001 we were no longer press darlings, no longer the hot new thing. We had to learn how to adapt to rising competition and expectations, and to falling sales. We had to figure out how to handle fragmented news media and emergent social media. We certainly feel fortunate to have been able to maintain the trust and support of our clientele through so many evolutions.

Who can say what our third decade will bring? Well, certainly there will be surprises, but what we know is that we will continue to work hard on those things under our control, such as food, service, and decor. We’ll remain committed to treating our 130-person-strong workforce with respect and compassion, appreciating their dedication and companionship. We will always be trying to get better. For us, that’s the best way to fulfill a truism we've always lived by: The best is yet to come!

The Benefit Restaurant Project

About The Elephant Walk

The Elephant Walk is family-owned and operated. We have been serving award-winning Cambodian and French cooking since 1991.

With locations in Boston, Cambridge, and Waltham, The Elephant Walk is convenient to Greater Bostonians from nearly all points.

Our Cambodian and French theme is an authentic reflection of our founders’ Cambodian ethnic and French cultural heritages. - We apologize [sort of!] for not being terribly easy to define. Frankly, we struggle with our identity a bit ourselves because The Elephant Walk is really a tapestry woven of so many different and distinct personal histories. - Accordingly, we invite you to view our first video, "Accidental Chefs," which helps introduce the unusual and complicated backgrounds of our chef-owners, and thereby begins to explain why The Elephant Walk is what it is!

Our bi-cultural menus satisfy our diverse clientele’s many hungers for both exotic - Cambodian, for the most part - and familiar dishes - French, mostly -and for a broad range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices. This diversity of options makes The Elephant Walk perfect for special events, both personal and professional. - Our award-winning wine lists add polish to your dining experience; our knowledgeable and personable service staff serve up the charm.

Finally, for those interested in learning more about our culinary and cultural influences, our chefs teach a broad range of cooking classes year-round, on Cambodian, French, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-Free and Fusion cuisines.

We look forward to serving you soon!
